OLED is a big advancement on the LCD panel used on the previous Switch – just compare an OLED TV with an LCD model to see the difference. The new screen is the headline feature of the new Switch, and a real step up on the previous model. It also positions the Switch OLED as slightly more expensive than the digital-only Xbox Series S (£249, $299, AU$499), but cheaper than the PS5 Digital Edition (£359, $399, AU$599). In our opinion, that's a fair price given how much of an upgrade OLED is compared to LCD. It means the Switch OLED costs £50 / $50 / AU$70 more than the standard model. The standard Switch can now be yours for only £260, while the Switch Lite will set you back £200. Nintendo recently lowered the price of the base model Switch in Europe, paving the way for the launch of the Switch OLED. The Nintendo Switch OLED costs £310 / $350 / AU$540 and comes in two colours: white and 'Neon' (red/blue). Head to Amazon, EB Games and JB HiFi to snap one up. The Switch (OLED model) has also landed in Australia. It's also worth checking Amazon, B&H Photo and GameStop. Target is said to be taking orders in-store while Best Buy is promising a Switch (OLED Model) restock "soon". In the US, most stores are out of stock, as retailers scramble to fulfil a backlog of preorders. Nintendo hasn't warned of any stock issues yet, but there's every chance supplies could become scarce. In the UK, the Switch (OLED model) is on sale at Game, Amazon, Argos, Currys and Smyths Toys. Nintendo Switch (OLED model): latest stock news Stock is already selling fast, but it's a lot easier to find than PS5 stock. Chances are this model will continue that success. In the meantime, we hope the 4K upscaling on your Ultra HD TV is working out ok for you.The existing Switch has been a runaway success for Nintendo, nearing 100 million sales since launching in 2017. Given that releases of Switch consoles so far have been roughly two years apart, it's likely that a 4K Switch, or at least a Switch OLED follow-up, wouldn't arrive until 2023 at the earliest. It's likely that Nintendo wants to keep the focus on its Switch OLED model, which has only just launched, and we don't expect a 4K iteration to launch imminently. We would love to see the Switch OLED dock aid upscaling and take some of the pressure off a 4K TV's processor, given cheap 4K displays can struggle on this count, or the introduction of HDR – though watching the hype cycle around the long-rumored 'Switch Pro' means we're a bit tired of disappointment in this area.įor the record, we have reached out to Nintendo, though the company usually stays pretty quiet, or simply shuts down speculation – even if it turns out to be true. You shouldn't expect your Nintendo Switch to start churning out 4K gameplay overnight, then. When a 4K Switch releases, it might just release with an identical (or near-identical dock), requiring fewer alterations and therefore obstacles to proceed to a next-gen iteration. It's likely cheaper to buy 4K-ready chips en masse, and Nintendo may have made the business decision to invest in certain chipsets and cables preemptively, even if they're not being used to their full potential just yet. It's also possible that Nintendo is simply using some 4K-ready hardware in its console chain ahead of a 4K model. However, as dataminer points out, the Realtek chip could be there to support improved audio transfer, or to support the introduction of an Ethernet port – new to the Switch OLED – rather than necessarily 4K upscaling. There's also the possibility of a firmware update opening up some hidden capabilities, as we saw with Nintendo releasing Bluetooth headphones support – four whole years after the console first launched. It could be a canny bit of backwards compatibility for those who choose to buy a 4K Switch when and if it eventually releases – allowing gamers to buy a standalone console without the dock, or at least have two 4K-capable docks in their home to shuttle their consoles around. An HDMI 2.0 cable certainly suggests that the Switch OLED dock is intended to be used for higher-resolution output at some point.
